At first glance it is often suspected that these distinctive stones have been shaped by humans, so people often misidentify them as ancient tools or weapons, however, they are naturally formed by a combination of wind and sand, the word Ventifact translates directly to "formed by the wind".
In order to form Ventifacts, you need two or three opposing winds, a supply of suitable stones and sand. Over time the surfaces of the stones are sandblasted and take on their distinctive shape. There are only a few places in the world where conditions are right for this to occur.
We bought this one from an old collector who picked this up more than 30 years ago, just north-west of Whanganui, New Zealand, where now, they are protected and you are not allowed to collect them anymore, which makes this a very special piece!
